Mary Mary Quite Contrary – Garden Collage

Mary Mary Quite Contrary
How does your garden grow?
With silver bells and cockle shells
And pretty maids all in a row, row, row
And pretty maids all in a row

Mary Mary Quite Contrary is one of the children’s favourites at Music Bus

Things to talk about

In between dodging the rain showers the sunshine is glorious and the garden full of scents and colour.
If you go into your garden, what colours can you see?
Talk about the colours and compare to other things around you
If you sniff, what can you smell?
Do you know the names of any of the flowers?

Garden Collage

A garden collage is a great way for you and your toddler to continue the fun and look at your flowers and garden when you’re back indoors.

Materials required

  • Leaves, flowers and petals
  • Shells and bells if you can find them
  • Magazines or catalogues
  • Wax crayons
  • Card and or Paper
  • Paints
  • Paintbrush
  • Glue stick
  • PVA glue
  • Scissors

Arrange your flowers on the card to make a garden and then glue in place. You might decide to have lots of different types of flowers or many of just a few varieties. Did you find any grass or leaves ? How do they feel, are they soft or hard and what colour are they? Talk about texture. Soft, hard, crinkly, bumpy.

What else can you add to complete the picture? Draw or paint some of the other things you might find in a garden or cut out pictures from magazines or catalogues.

How does your collage look? You will need to leave it to dry before finding a special place to put it where you can see it.

Well done!
