Make your own Dance Ribbons

We recognize how much children instinctively love to move and dance to music and can’t resist swaying, jumping or moving to a piece of rhythmic music, which we think is fantastic and want to embrace this feeling. We like to make it as much fun as possible and have found that children enjoy dancing even more if they have something in their hand to swirl around as they dance. This could be a light and colourful scarf, a ribbon or a simple piece of floaty fabric that ‘dances’ with them as they move, swirl and twirl.

Dance ribbons are a firm favourite with boys and girls alike, especially if they are colourful, easy to hold and age appropriate. . Here is one way to make some lovely dance ribbons, don’t forget to make one for mum or dad too so that you can around together!

Dance Ribbons

You will need:

  • Plastic curtain or shower rings, one for each dance ribbon
  • 5/8″ ribbons in bright colours
  • Scissors
  • Sewing maching or needle and thread

Cut the ribbons to 26” in length and choose 8 different colours.
Line them up together on top of each other and thread through the curtain ring, ensuring they are in one neat pile and all the same length.
When they are pulled half way through the ring, so that equal length of ribbon is over both sides and it appears now like you have 16 ribbons, sew the ribbons together where they fold over, just outside of the curtain ring. You can do this on a sewing machine or by hand, making sure they are firmly held in place.

Trim the ends of the ribbon either straight across, in a V shape or diagonally so that they are neat.

You can choose how many ribbons you use, you may decide simply to use 1,2 or 3. For tiny children you can make them just 6” in length (12” folded over in half), or longer for older children.

Put on some of your favourite music and dance, sway, twirl and watch as your dance ribbon follows you.

Hold it up high and see how many pretty colours you can name.
